7 Reasons David Is Called “a Man After God’s Own Heart?” Part 5

Why was David called a "Man after God's own heart?"

Praise the Lord everyone! What is on my heart this month? Chasing after God’s heart, and catching it! Years ago a popular book came out by the author Tommy Tenney, and the title of this book was called God Chasers. King David was a God chaser, a man relentless in his pursuit to
know God intimately and have God more in his life.
At this time in Israel’s history Saul who had been appointed king had made several direct acts of disobedience, disobeying direct commands from the Lord. Thus God had seen enough, and was seeking someone to replace Saul, and God spoke to his servant the prophet Samuel to
speak these words in

1 Samuel 13:13–14 (NKJV).
13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought
for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.” Then in 1 Samuel 16, God speak to Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel.

1 Samuel 16:1 (NKJV)
1Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”

Jesse had 8 sons, and the youngest would be David, and he was God’s
choice.
Question: “What made David different...in that he would stand out to God?” As we learned the past few months,
1)David Had Great Faith in God!
2) David Had Great Trust in God!
3) David Had a Passion for Spiritual Things!
4) David Kept a Humble Heart!
Now this brings us to our fifth reason about David...

5) David Confessed His Sins!

Later in his life, David compromised his integrity, and took a drastic downfall in his actions as God’s chosen vessel. He seduced and slept with a married woman Bathsheba and then, to cover up the transgression had her husband murdered on the battlefield so she would be widowed. Afterwards, while pregnant with his child, David would marry her, and bring her in to the palace. Everything seemed as if David had gotten away with it, and by marrying the widow Bathsheba his transgressions were seemingly covered up. But the Bible teaches…

Numbers 32:23 (NKJV)
23…. then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.
Shortly after these events, Nathan the Prophet is given the truth by the Lord, and Nathan is sent to
confront David over his transgressions. How would he react? He is the KING of Israel, the most powerful man at this time.

2 Samuel 12:1–7 (NKJV)
Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him: “There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds.
But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him. And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.” Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!”

2 Samuel 12:9 (NKJV)
Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.

David was distressed when the prophet Nathan revealed the terrible thing David had done. Instead of making excuses for his behavior, David said…

2 Samuel 12:13 (NKJV)
So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

Though David made horrible decisions, he took responsibility and had remorse for his actions. He earnestly sought God's forgiveness. David penned Psalm 51, “A Prayer of Repentance,” after his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah. In this Psalm, David brokenheartedly confesses his sin and asked for God's forgiveness and restoration.
Psalm 51:3–4 (NKJV)
For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.

When exposed, and confronted with a sin or transgression how do you react? Do you make excuses, or like David, admit your faults and seek God for forgiveness?
