7 Reasons David Is Called “a Man After God’s Own Heart?” Part 6

Have you ever asked my David was called a man after God's own heart?

Praise the Lord everyone! What is on my heart this month? Chasing after God’s heart, and catching it! Years ago a popular book came out
by the author Tommy Tenney, and the title of this book was called God
Chasers. King David was a God chaser, a man relentless in his pursuit to
know God intimately and have God more in his life.
At this time in Israel’s history Saul who had been appointed king had
made several direct acts of disobedience, disobeying direct commands
from the Lord. Thus God had seen enough, and was seeking someone
to replace Saul, and God spoke to his servant the prophet Samuel to
speak these words in 1 Samuel 13:13–14 (NKJV).
13And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept
the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you.
For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought
for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded
him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what
the LORD commanded you.”
Then in 1 Samuel 16, God speak to Samuel to anoint the next king of
Israel. 1 Samuel 16:1 (NKJV)
1Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil,
and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided
Myself a king among his sons.”
Jesse had 8 sons, and the youngest would be David, and he was God’s
choice.
Question: “What made David different...in that he would stand out to
God?” As we learned the past few months for review...
1) David Had Great Faith in God!
2) David Had Great Trust in God!
3) David Had a Passion for Spiritual Things!
4) David Kept a Humble Heart!
5) David Confessed His Sins!

Now we come the 6th thing about David, that God would say of him “that he is a man after my own
heart.”
6) David lived a life of forgiveness.
Psalm 51 (NKJV)
After David was confronted by the sins he committed with Bathsheba...David would pen Psalm 51 as a
cry to God and request to receive his forgiveness.
1Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me
thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from
my sin. 3
For I acknowledge my transgressions, And
my sin is always before me. 4
Against You, You only,
have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That
You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
7
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash
me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Make me hear
joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken
may rejoice. 9Hide Your face from my sins, And blot
out all my iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O
God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11Do not
cast me away from Your presence, And do not take
Your Holy Spirit from me. 12Restore to me the joy of
Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous
Spirit. 13Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You. 14Deliver me
from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my
salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your
righteousness. 15O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth
shall show forth Your praise. 16For You do not desire
sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in
burnt offering. 17The sacrifices of God are a broken
spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God,
You will not despise.
David knew that seeking God’s forgiveness was all
that was needed after being confronted by what he
had done. Not only did he acknowledge it, he also
knew that God would restore him after seeking that
forgiveness. So many people struggle finding God’s
forgiveness and accepting it. David not only accepted
it, but believe God would bring him back to joy, and
back to that heart of worship again. David said these
words after his confession, “And my tongue shall
sing aloud of Your righteousness. 15O Lord, open my
lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.”
Over the years I have met Christians that just can’t
do this...to receive God’s forgiveness, and forgive
themselves. Many I have met, have just stayed in a
place of unworthiness and self abuse, because they
feel God is not extending his forgiveness to them, or
that they are unworthy to receive it. This is simply
one of the greatest lies of the enemy, that what we
may have done is so horrible there is no forgiveness
for us. I have heard these words from people’s
mouth’s “I don’t think God will forgive me.” So I ask
them… “did you ask God to forgive you?” And many
say “yes I did.” So I take them...to 1 John 1:9 and
have them read it aloud...
1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
This is what made David a man after God’s own
heart, in that not only did he seek God’s forgiveness,
he received it, and lived his life knowing and believing he was forgiven.
My final word to you…ask God to forgive you, forgive
yourself, and walk in the freedom God offers to you.
